What to listen for

  • In-Phase Perception: Sound should feel focused centered inside your head with full, solid bass.
  • Out-of-Phase Perception: Center image collapses, sounding diffuse, hollow, and wide with reduced bass.
  • Observational Check: If standard playback sounds hollow while inverted playback sounds centered, check your audio cable connection or device balance.

Technical context

Opposing signal polarity creates psychoacoustic phase cancellation when left and right sound waves mix. In headphones, out-of-phase audio creates an unnatural "outside the head" sensation.
